Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Eight of Pentacles
The Eight of Pentacles shows a figure carving coins, tools laid out. It is the card of the apprentice's work — practice, craft and the repetition that makes mastery.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Work, employment, commission, craftsmanship, skill in craft and business, perhaps in the preparatory stage.
Reversed meaning
Voided ambition, vanity, cupidity, exaction, usury. It may also signify the possession of skill, in the sense of the ingenious mind turned to cunning and intrigue.
Psychological themes
It represents the dignity of doing the small thing well. It appears at a stage of learning by repetition. The coins are not yet perfect; the making is the point.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Eight is work, employment and craftsmanship. It has long been read as skill in craft and business, and by reversal as voided ambition and usury. The figure carves; the craft improves.
Ways to reflect on this card

Common questions
What does the Eight of Pentacles mean?
Apprenticeship and craft — the repetitive work that builds skill. Diligence in the making.
Eight vs Three of Pentacles?
The Three is the arch raised with a team; the Eight is the solitary apprentice at the bench. One builds with others, the other alone.
