Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

Eight of Cups

The Eight of Cups shows a figure walking away from eight arranged cups, toward mountains. It is the card of the willing departure — leaving what no longer means enough.

Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.

Upright meaning

The card speaks for itself on the surface, but other readings are entirely antithetical--giving joy, mildness, timidity, honour, modesty. In practice, it is usually found that the card shews the decline of a matter, or that a matter which has been thought to be important is really of slight consequence--either for good or evil.

Reversed meaning

Great joy, happiness, feasting.

Psychological themes

It represents the courage to quit a settled thing. It appears when the cup you built is empty to you now. The walk is mournful but necessary.

Traditional and cultural meanings

In the traditional reading the Eight is the decline of a matter, or a thing thought important revealed as slight. It has long been read as quiet withdrawal, and by reversal as great joy and feasting. The figure leaves the cups for the unknown.

Ways to reflect on this card

  • If you leave: the cup that stopped feeding you.
  • If you stay: ask why it is still enough.
  • If you grieve: the leaving is its own honesty.

Questions for reflection

  • What have I outgrown that I keep performing?
  • Is leaving a failure or a clearing?
  • What am I walking toward, not just from?

Common questions

What does the Eight of Cups mean?

A deliberate leaving — walking away from what no longer satisfies. Not loss, but a choice to seek more.

Eight vs Five of Cups?

The Five mourns what was lost; the Eight walks from what is empty. One grieves, the other departs.
