Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Eight of Wands
The Eight of Wands shows eight wands flying through the air, unimpeded. It is the card of swift movement — messages, momentum, the path clearing.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Activity in undertakings, the path of such activity, swiftness, as that of an express messenger; great haste, great hope, speed towards an end which promises assured felicity; generally, that which is on the move; also the arrows of love.
Reversed meaning
Arrows of jealousy, internal dispute, stingings of conscience, quarrels; and domestic disputes for persons who are married.
Psychological themes
It represents energy finally unblocked: things arriving and leaving fast. It appears when waiting ends and motion takes over. The speed is the message; don't brake it.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Eight is activity, swiftness and the arrows of love. It has long been read as haste toward assured felicity, and by reversal as jealousy, dispute and domestic quarrels. The wands are in flight; the delay is over.
Ways to reflect on this card
- If you are moving: let the speed carry you.
- If you wait: the answer is incoming.
- If you rush: aim, or the arrow strays.
Questions for reflection
- What has been stuck that is now flowing?
- Am I ready for the speed, or resisting it?
- What message am I about to receive?
