Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Nine of Wands
The Nine of Wands shows a bandaged figure, one wand in hand, eight planted behind. It is the card of the wounded defender — strength that has been tested and still stands.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
The card signifies strength in opposition. If attacked, the person will meet an onslaught boldly; and his build shews, that he may prove a formidable antagonist. With this main significance there are all its possible adjuncts--delay, suspension, adjournment.
Reversed meaning
Obstacles, adversity, calamity.
Psychological themes
It represents resilience after blows: the capacity to keep holding the line. It appears when you are tired but not done. The bandage is proof, not weakness.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Nine is strength in opposition and the formidable antagonist. It has long been read as bold meeting of an onslaught, with delay and adjournment, and by reversal as obstacles and calamity. The figure stands; that is the reading.
