Seven of Pentacles

The Seven of Pentacles shows a figure leaning on a tool, gazing at growing coins on a bush. It is the card of the wait — investment tending toward its slow return.

The 1909 Waite-Smith artwork is used as a prompt for reflection, rather than a prediction.

Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.

Upright meaning

These are exceedingly contradictory; in the main, it is a card of money, business, barter; but one reading gives altercation, quarrels--and another innocence, ingenuity, purgation.

Reversed meaning

Cause for anxiety regarding money which it may be proposed to lend.

Psychological themes

It represents patient labour and the doubt that comes mid-growth. It appears when the work is in but the yield is not yet. The figure rests and looks; the waiting is the work now.

Traditional and cultural meanings

In the traditional reading the Seven is money, business and barter. It has long been read as altercation and innocence, and by reversal as anxiety about a loan. The coins grow; the gardener waits.

Ways to reflect on this card

  • If you tend: the slow return, trust it.
  • If you doubt: the growth you cannot yet see.
  • If you tire: rest, then look again.

Questions for reflection

  • What am I patiently waiting to yield?
  • Is my doubt about the work or the wait?
  • What would "enough" growth look like?
