Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Ace of Swords
The Ace of Swords is a hand offering a sword crowned with a wreath and laurel. It is the card of the cutting truth — clarity, and the force that divides.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Triumph, the excessive degree in everything, conquest, triumph of force. It is a card of great force, in love as well as in hatred. The crown may carry a much higher significance than comes usually within the sphere of fortune-telling.
Reversed meaning
The same, but the results are disastrous; another account says--conception, childbirth, augmentation, multiplicity.
Psychological themes
It represents the birth of clear thought: insight that separates truth from noise. It appears at a breakthrough that can wound as it frees. The crown marks a meaning above mere strife.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Ace is triumph and the excess of everything. It has long been read as conquest in love and hate, and by reversal as disastrous results or childbirth. The sword cuts; what it severs needed severing.
Ways to reflect on this card
