Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Ace of Wands
The Ace of Wands is a hand offering a wand aflame with leaves. It is the spark of initiative — a new drive, a new creative fire.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Creation, invention, enterprise, the powers which result in these; principle, beginning, source; birth, family, origin, and in a sense the virility which is behind them; the starting point of enterprises; according to another account, money, fortune, inheritance.
Reversed meaning
Fall, decadence, ruin, perdition, to perish also a certain clouded joy.
Psychological themes
It represents the birth of impulse and will: the idea that arrives charged. It appears at a beginning full of energy. Its risk is the spark that burns out before it is built.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Ace is creation, enterprise and source. It has long been read as the starting point of ventures, and by reversal as fall, ruin and a clouded joy. The flame is offered; what you do with it is yours.
