Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Two of Swords
The Two of Swords shows a blindfolded figure holding two swords crossed, a calm sea behind. It is the card of the held decision — balance kept by not choosing.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Conformity and the equipoise which it suggests, courage, friendship, concord in a state of arms; another reading gives tenderness, affection, intimacy. The suggestion of harmony and other favourable readings must be considered in a qualified manner, as Swords generally are not symbolical of beneficent forces in human affairs.
Reversed meaning
Imposture, falsehood, duplicity, disloyalty.
Psychological themes
It represents the pause of indecision: two equal claims, and the comfort of neither. It appears when you postpone a choice to keep the peace. The blindfold is self-chosen.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Two is conformity, courage and friendship in arms. It has long been read as tenderness and affection, and by reversal as imposture, falsehood and disloyalty. The swords cross; the sea waits.
Ways to reflect on this card
- If you stall: the choice you keep avoiding.
- If you balance: peace bought by blindness.
- If you decide: the blindfold can come off.
Questions for reflection
- What am I refusing to decide?
- Is this balance, or avoidance?
