Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Two of Cups
The Two of Cups shows two figures offering cups, a caduceus between them. It is the card of配对 — mutual feeling, the bond that meets in the middle.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Love, passion, friendship, affinity, union, concord, sympathy, the interrelation of the sexes, and--as a suggestion apart from all offices of divination--that desire which is not in Nature, but by which Nature is sanctified.
Reversed meaning
Lust, cupidity, jealousy, wish, desire, but the card may also give, says W., "that desire which is not in nature, but by which nature is sanctified."
Psychological themes
It represents reciprocal connection: attraction that is answered. It appears at a union, a partnership, a truce between two. The exchange is equal; that is the health of it.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Two is love, friendship and the interrelation of the sexes. It has long been read as union and sympathy, and by reversal as lust, jealousy and cupidity. The caduceus blesses the meeting of two.
Ways to reflect on this card
- If you connect: a bond that meets you.
- If you pair: equality, not possession.
- If you want: the desire that sanctifies, not consumes.
Questions for reflection
- Is this connection mutual or imagined?
- What am I offering, not just wanting?
- Where is the balance tilted?
