Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Four of Wands
The Four of Wands shows four wands crowned with flowers, two figures celebrating beneath. It is the card of home and harvest — a haven reached, a reason to rejoice.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
They are for once almost on the surface--country life, haven of refuge, a species of domestic harvest-home, repose, concord, harmony, prosperity, peace, and the perfected work of these.
Reversed meaning
The meaning remains unaltered; it is prosperity, increase, felicity, beauty, embellishment.
Psychological themes
It represents the relief of arrival and belonging. It appears at a settled milestone, a gathering, a place made safe. The celebration is the point, not a distraction from work.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Four is domestic harvest-home, repose and harmony. It has long been read as prosperity, peace and the perfected work of these, and by reversal as the same unaltered. The wands are a gateway you have earned.

Common questions
Is the Four of Wands about marriage?
Often it marks a happy gathering or milestone — marriage among them, but also any homecoming, launch or reunion worth marking.
Four vs Three of Wands?
The Three is the venture leaving port; the Four is the haven it returns to. One sends out, the other welcomes in.
