Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Three of Wands
The Three of Wands shows a figure on the shore watching ships depart. It is the card of established strength and trade sent outward — the first fruits of a venture.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
He symbolizes established strength, enterprise, effort, trade, commerce, discovery; those are his ships, bearing his merchandise, which are sailing over the sea. The card also signifies able co-operation in business, as if the successful merchant prince were looking from his side towards yours with a view to help you.
Reversed meaning
The end of troubles, suspension or cessation of adversity, toil and disappointment.
Psychological themes
It represents forward momentum backed by real capacity. It appears when effort begins to pay and cooperation arrives. The ships are your work, travelling without you.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Three is enterprise, trade and discovery. It has long been read as able co-operation in business, and by reversal as the end of troubles and the cessation of adversity. The merchant looks out because the goods are already moving.
