Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

Temperance

Temperance pours water between two cups, one foot on land and one in water. She is the card of right measure — patience, blending and the middle path.

The 1909 Waite-Smith artwork is used as a prompt for reflection, rather than a prediction.

Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.

Upright meaning

Economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation.

Reversed meaning

Things connected with churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, sometimes even the priest who will marry the Querent; also disunion, unfortunate combinations, competing interests.

Psychological themes

She represents the temperate self that mixes opposites without losing either. She appears when excess has burnt out and balance is needed. Her work is slow combination, not dramatic change.

Traditional and cultural meanings

In the traditional reading Temperance is economy, moderation and management. It has long been read as frugality and accommodation, and by reversal as disunion, competing interests or the priesthood. The angel blends; she does not choose one cup.

Ways to reflect on this card

  • If you are extreme: the middle that heals.
  • If you are mixing: two parts of life becoming one.
  • If you are worn: restore by measure, not by force.

Questions for reflection

  • Where have you swung too far?
  • What two things in your life need blending?
  • What would "enough" look like today?

Common questions

Is Temperance about alcohol?

Not in the modern sense. It is about moderation and skilful mixing of opposites — patience, balance, the tempered hand.

Temperance vs the Hermit?

Both are quiet; the Hermit withdraws to see, Temperance stays in the world and blends what it finds there.
