Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

Six of Cups

The Six of Cups shows a child offering another a cup of flowers, a garden of cups behind. It is the card of memory and the sweetness of what was.

Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.

Upright meaning

A card of the past and of memories, looking back, as--for example--on childhood; happiness, enjoyment, but coming rather from the past; things that have vanished. Another reading reverses this, giving new relations, new knowledge, new environment, and then the children are disporting in an unfamiliar precinct.

Reversed meaning

The future, renewal, that which will come to pass presently.

Psychological themes

It represents the pull of the past: nostalgia, innocence recalled, the old made present. It appears at a return or a memory that comforts. The risk is living backward.

Traditional and cultural meanings

In the traditional reading the Six is the past, childhood and happiness from before. It has long been read as things vanished, and by reversal as new relations and a new environment. The children play where you once played.

Ways to reflect on this card

  • If you remember: the past that still feeds you.
  • If you return: an old place, made new.
  • If you linger: the present you are missing.

Questions for reflection

  • What from my past is worth keeping?
  • Am I remembering, or escaping?
  • What would the child in me want?

Common questions

What does the Six of Cups mean?

Memory and innocence — the past recalled with warmth, sometimes a return. Nostalgia, and what it teaches.

Six vs Ten of Cups?

The Six is the past remembered; the Ten is the present fulfilled. One looks back, the other rests now.
