Waite-Smith tarot (1909)
Page of Wands
The Page of Wands is a young figure with a wand, gazing at its flame. It is the card of the eager message-bearer — a spark of news, a fresh interest.
Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.
Upright meaning
Dark young man, faithful, a lover, an envoy, a postman. Beside a man, he will bear favourable testimony concerning him. A dangerous rival, if followed by the Page of Cups. Has the chief qualities of his suit. He may signify family intelligence.
Reversed meaning
Anecdotes, announcements, evil news. Also indecision and the instability which accompanies it.
Psychological themes
It represents the novice enthusiasm: curiosity that has not yet been tested. It appears as news, a study begun, a flirt of an idea. The risk is the flame that doesn't commit to a fire.
Traditional and cultural meanings
In the traditional reading the Page is a dark young messenger, faithful and envoy. It has long been read as favourable testimony and family intelligence, and by reversal as evil news and indecision. The page carries; he does not yet wield.
Ways to reflect on this card
- If news comes: a spark worth following.
- If you start: the interest, not yet the craft.
- If you waver: the message is real, decide.
Questions for reflection
- What new interest am I flirting with?
- Is this news worth acting on?
- Where is my curiosity not yet courage?
