Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

Five of Pentacles

The Five of Pentacles shows two figures walking in snow past a lit window, five discs on a banner. It is the card of material want — hardship endured outside the warmth.

Historical meanings below are quoted from A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911). The language reflects that period; the following sections offer contemporary reflection.

Upright meaning

The card foretells material trouble above all, whether in the form illustrated--that is, destitution--or otherwise. For some cartomancists, it is a card of love and lovers-wife, husband, friend, mistress; also concordance, affinities. These alternatives cannot be harmonized.

Reversed meaning

Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy.

Psychological themes

It represents the experience of lack: poverty, exclusion, the cold just beyond the lit glass. It appears at financial or belonging trouble. The window is warm; the help is nearer than it looks.

Traditional and cultural meanings

In the traditional reading the Five is material trouble and destitution. It has long been read as love and lovers, and by reversal as disorder and ruin. The church window is lit; the figures walk past it.

Ways to reflect on this card

  • If you lack: the warmth you have not entered.
  • If you suffer: the hardship is real, not final.
  • If you pass: the help behind the glass.

Questions for reflection

  • What lack am I enduring that has a remedy?
  • Am I truly outside, or afraid to knock?
  • Where is the help I keep walking past?

Common questions

Is the Five of Pentacles only about money?

It is material and belonging trouble — poverty, exclusion, cold. But the lit window shows help is closer than it feels.

Five vs Four of Pentacles?

The Four clutches what it has; the Five lacks what it needs. One guards, the other goes without.
